Quality mountain bike disc brake pads extreme testing results

If you want to improve the performance of your mountain bike brakes and are looking for online mountain bike brake pad reviews, it´s easy to find subjective tests that usually end up with conclusions like "good durability", "they have great power", or similar. This type of evidences even though they are very important, rely heavily on the rider perception and the testing conditions, which tend to be highly variable.

Below you can see how a pair of disc brake pads finished after an extreme test performed to check the reliability againts critical failures that could put ourselves in danger.

Extreme testing


The test run was performed using RAHOX semi-metallic mountain bike disc brake pads with SuperSpeed compound. The braking system was a basic Shimano BR M486, and the test was completed full braking only with the front brake, while maintaining an average speed of 25 km/h for 75m. Four consecutive runs were performed ​​under the same conditions, cooling the system down between each run. You can see the last run below.

 

Results

After performing four runs, the braking system was still able to run without relevant issues (of course not with best braking performance), and no critical damage in the calliper or brake pads was found.

As you can see in the following pictures brake pads were damaged, but there was no dangerous critical failure (such as for example the detachment of the pad friction material). Two of the images are magnified to appreciate the details.

You can also see that there was a lot of friction material still remaining (over 60%), and with a bit of sandpaper these pads could be restored.

The calliper was overheated but not severely and without any permanent damage. Pistons and seals didn´t suffered any damage (the calliper is still rocking in a Rocky Mountain UK Project), but due to the high temperatures reached during the test (more than 600°C on the disc surface), the calliper was blackened by burnt friction expelled material.
