Magura 2014 dual piston brake range unveiled: MT2, MT4, MT6, MT8

Magura is definitely an innovator of hydraulic brakes for mountain bikes, manufacturing the first hydraulic braking system for mountain bikes in 1987. With over 60 years of experience developing brakes for motorcycles, now the company introduces the new MT range of mountain bike brakes, revamping everything across the entire MT range.

Magura MT dual piston range

All the even numbered brake models (MT2, MT4, MT6 and MT8) come with two piston calipers, and all new Magura MT callipers are now forged from a single piece of aluminium, including the entry-level MT2.

Magura MT6 Calliper

Each brake unit master cylinder is made from Carbotecture. This material is basically a strong carbon fibres reinforced plastic (CFRP) developed by Magura. The MT8 features also carbon fibre levers.

All the MT range features an open hydraulic design with expansion chamber, a very common design in many other brands, and a dual piston floating calliper.
The MT range has different models, starting with the entry-level MT2, and ending with the lightest brake that Magura currently offers, the MT8. Just to remember even numbers are for dual piston brakes (MT2, MT4, MT6, MT8) and odd numbers for four piston brakes (MT5, MT7), more gravity oriented.

New across the entire Magura MT range are the magnetic brake pistons (magnetiXchange) for easy brake pad replacement, so there’s no springs needed in the callipers.
Magura MT brakes use mineral oil called Royal Blood. Mineral oil, unlike DOT fluid, is not hygroscopic (does not absorb water) resulting in reduced maintenance, and is also not aggressive with the paint of your bike frame or fork, which is a good thing in the rare event that you need bleeding the system.
New MT range comes with different leverage ratios, using the same basic design and just moving the pivots and contact points in the design of the different models, giving a sharper bite point and more power for a more experienced riders, in the MT4, MT6 and MT8 models.
Other interesting design feature within the MT range is the symmetrical design of the brake lever/master, so it works for both front or rear.

Magura MT2
The Magura MT2 is the entry level and is oriented to cross-country or city bikes. Using the Carbotecture technology, Magura declares that the MT2 is one of the lightest brakes in its segment.
  • 2-finger Carbotecture brake lever and Carbotecture master housing.
  • Adjustable lever reach.
  • Forged one piece, 2-piston floating calliper.
  • MagnetiXchange brake pistons for easy brake pad replacement.
  • Weight 365 g
  • Price €79 including adaptor and rotor.

Magura MT4
The new MT4 is an all-rounder designed to give enhanced braking performance over the entry-level MT2, moving the pivots and contact points in the lever to give a sharper bite point with more power.
  • 2-finger, aluminium brake lever
  • Adjustable lever reach
  • Carbotecture master housing and handlebar clamp
  • Forged one piece, 2-piston floating calliper.
  • MagnetiXchange brake pistons for easy brake pad replacement
  • Weight 345 g
  • Price €119 including adaptor and rotor.

Magura MT6
The MT6 shares many of the features as the higher end model, the MT8, but using an alloy lever allows Magura to bring costs down. The increased transmission ratio improves the brake power over the MT4, and features a tool less brake adjustments.
  • Forged, 2-piston aluminium brake lever
  • Toolless adjustment of lever reach and bite point
  • Carbotecture® SL housing and aluminium handlebar clamp
  • Forged one piece, 2-piston floating calliper.
  • MagnetiXchange brake pistons for easy brake pad replacement
  • Weight 320 g
  • Price €219 including adaptor and rotor.

Magura MT8
With its full-carbon brake lever, the performance-oriented MT8 is the lightest brake that Magura currently offers. The Magura MT8 is a sub 300g brake (299g front brake with 800mm cable, 160mm rotor and screws).
  • 2-finger, Carbolay brake lever.
  • Toolless adjustment of lever reach and bite point
  • Forged one piece, 2-piston floating calliper.
  • MagnetiXchange brake pistons for easy brake pad replacement
  • Weight 299 g
  • Price €319 including adaptor and rotor.
